COLOMBO: The country’s biggest sponsorship deal has been sealed by the telecom giant Dialog Axiata with a three-year arrangement supporting Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), Daily Financial Times reported on Monday.

The deal was first reported by Daily FT on February 13, 2013.

According to a posting on the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) website on Sunday, the Dialog has entered into a binding contract with SLC, as per a filing to the CSE made on Thursday, as the official sponsor of the National Men’s and Women’s Cricket Teams, to a value of Rs. 754 million plus taxes.

“Under the terms of the contract, Sri Lanka Cricket has awarded Dialog Axiata, the title of ‘Official National Team Sponsor of Sri Lanka Cricket’, covering all tours of both in Sri Lanka and overseas, of the National Men’s and Women’s Cricket Teams for a period of three years, commencing from 1st June 2013,” the statement said.

The Daily FT learns that 40 percent of the contract value has already been paid to SLC by Dialog several weeks ago and with this announcement by Dialog, the confusion or bitter tussle for glory over sponsorship of SLC, Sri Lankans much loved game, ends apparently.

Industry competitor, Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel, which was originally contracted for three years, will be replaced by Dialog and according to many analysts, the Dialog’s magnanimous bid shows the true expression of enthusiasm it has to promote the much loved sport in Sri Lanka, with a strong international following.

Sri Lanka leads the ICC rankings in the T20 format, is placed sixth in ICC Test rankings and fifth in the ODI rankings.
