Cricket fans around the world are bracing themselves to be a part of history as India's favourite son Sachin Tendulkar begins his Farewell Series on Wednesday November 6 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata in the first Test against West Indies.

Tendulkar will play his 200th and final Test match at his home ground in Mumbai from November 14-18 in his glorious 24-year international career.

The 40-year-old cricket icon is poised to script the final chapter before retiring from all forms of the game.

Tendulkar, who made his international debut against Pakistan in 1989 as a 16-year-old, will be aiming to finish on a high.

Cricket will be overshadowed by Tendulkar during the next fortnight with the sport's most prolific run-getter who has often been compared to the great Sir Don Bradman.

"Any retirement is greeted with sadness. After November 18, there will be no Tendulkar in action. So the frenzy is understandable. He is the biggest cricketer after Sir Don Bradman and his retirement is the biggest of them all," another Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar was reported as saying.

Tendulkar has accumulated 15,837 runs in 198 Tests and 18,426 runs in 463 one-day internationals.

The diminutive batsman holds the record for playing the most number of Tests, with retired Australians Ricky Ponting and Steve Waugh second with 168.

Tendulkar also holds the record for most Test and one-day international runs scored, as well as the most test (51) and ODI (49) centuries.

However, Tendulkar has had his critics after enduring a tough time especially in the last couple of years when he took 21 Tests and 12 ODIs to get to his 100th International centuries that came against minnows Bangladesh on March 16, 2012.

But in Tests, Tendulkar is stranded at 51 tons and is yet to score a century in 21 matches since his 146 in Cape Town on January 2, 2011.

Both Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his counterpart Darren Sammy said they were trying to focus on the cricket despite the frenzy to salute Tendulkar.

"The focus is there. We are not thinking of anything except cricket. There are things that have to happen but as far as the last few days are concerned, we are absolutely normal," he said.

India will be bolstered by the return of Shikhar Dhawan to strengthen their batting.

The left-hander struck an enterprising 187 in his Test debut in Mohali only to sit out in the second essay picking up an injury and going on to miss the last Test against Australia earlier this year.

Dhawan was in blistering form in the recent ODI series and would look to lay the foundation at the top with Murali Vijay, while Cheteshwar Pujara will play the sheet-anchor role.

India's middle-order would see a new face in Rohit Sharma when he makes his a Test debut at the Eden. After having played 108 ODIs and scored 3,049 runs, Sharma is oozing with confidence after becoming only the third batsman ever to score an ODI double-hundred in the recent home series against Australia.

Sharma was due for a Test debut against the touring South Africans in 2009-10 but a freak injury kept him on the sidelines.

"We're honoured to play a series in India which will bring curtains down on Sachin's career but we're here to compete and play very hard cricket," West Indies captain Sammy told reporters at the pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

"He's a great ambassador for the sport. He deserves all the hype and the praises he's getting," the skipper added.

Sammy's men lost 2-0 in a three-Test series during their last tour of India in 2011.
