Wayne Rooney on Saturday apologised to England fans for the country's disastrous exit from the World Cup after two defeats.

The 28-year-old Manchester United striker said on his Facebook page that he was "absolutely devastated" and "gutted" by the losses to Italy and Uruguay in Group D.

Costa Rica beat Italy 1-0, snuffing out any remaining hope for England.

"Sorry to all the fans that travelled and at home that we haven't done better," said Rooney, who did manage to get his first World Cup finals goal in the Uruguay game.

"Going into each game we had great belief in ourselves but unfortunately it hasn't worked out," he added.

Midfielder Jack Wilshere sent the same message to England fans.

"Gutted doesn't come close to how I am feeling right now. Sorry to all the fans who came out and supported us, and everyone back home," the 22-year-old Arsenal player said on his Twitter account.

England have faced withering criticism from the media. But the English Football Association has insisted it will stick with coach Roy Hodgson for the Euro 2016 qualifiers.

England's Fifa World Cup 2014 run seems to be in tatters after the two goals scored by Liverpool striker Luis Suarez. The nation's party mood soon gave way to gloom and fans were horrified to watch Uruguay end up with 2-1 win at Sao Paulo.

Now, the Three Lions are languishing at the bottom of Group D and hoping against hope that Italy will do them a big favour by winning both of their final group games.

If the slim window of opportunity also closes down, then circa 1958, it will be the first time that England have been knocked out at the tournament's group stage.

Last night's match was watched by about 20 million on television at home, according to a report in Daily Mail.

Going to Brazil, Wayne Rooney has been under tremendous pressure to come up with a winning performance. He is England's fifth best scorer of all time with 39 international goals scored in his career.

His wife Coleen and four-year-old son Kai also went to Brazil to give him support during this crucial phase in his career. And even though England players left millions disappointed, the Rooney family would view the lone goal scored by Rooney as a consolation prize.

Coleen tweeted not much after the game to say: 'Gutted with the score, but so pleased @WayneRooney scored and his boys were here to see it!!'
