Robin van Persie has given the clearest hint he wants to quit Arsenal after contracts talks with manager Arsene Wenger and chief executive Ivan Gazidis broke down on Wednesday.

The Gunners skipper expressed his frustration at the club's inability to end their trophy-drought despite battling to a third-place finish after a catastrophic start to the season.

Arsenal had hoped to persuade their captain to agree a lucrative new three-year deal worth £130,000 a week that would see off interest from champions Manchester City and keep him at the Emirates, according to The Sun.

But the Dutch striker has doubts whether Arsenal will be able to compete next season.

Van Persie has seen his former Gunners team-mates Gael Clichy and Samir Nasri win the title this season after joining Manchester City last summer.

Italian giants Juventus have put together a lucrative package which includes a £25m transfer fee and £180,000-a-week contract for the Premier League top goal scorer, according to the Mirror.

City are in pole position to lure Van Persie and are ready to put together a £25m deal and £250,000-a-week contract, it added.

Manchester United are also keen to battle City to sign the Dutch international.

Wenger lost the battle last summer to retain Cesc Fabregas who rejoined his childhood club Barcelona but faces a more difficult job to convince Van Persie to stay at Emirates.

Arsenal have already signed Lukas Podolski for £9.7m from Cologne and others are likely to follow .

However, Van Persie is desperate for mega signings to help them win trophies, having voiced similar concerns to Wenger last summer.

Arsenal were staying tight-lipped on Wednesday night but they are prepared to hold the player to the final year of his contract.
