England manager Fabio Capello has questioned Arsenal’s handling of injured midfielder Jack Wilshere reigniting the country versus club debate.

Wilshere, 19, fears he could be out with an ankle problem for up to three months and will not play again for his country this year.

'The Sun' reported that Capello expressed surprised the midfielder was allowed to go on holiday rather than receive treatment after suffering a recurrence of the long-standing problem against Switzerland in June.

He then played in Arsenal’s Far East tour before breaking down against New York Red Bulls in the Emirates Cup.

Capello, preparing to face Wales at Wembley on Tuesday night, said: “I know he suffered the same injury two years ago.

“He then suffered this accident against Switzerland and afterwards he went on holiday.

“He started the season and was not fit - then yes, no, yes, no?

“Now they’ve found the problem. It’s not my job to say what happened but he suffered against Switzerland and then went on holiday for a month.

“I hope he will be fit in a really short time for Arsenal and for us, as he’s a really important player for both.”

Capello’s comments will raise tensions with Gunners manager Arsene Wenger.

The England boss wanted Wilshere to compete in this summer’s European Under-21 Championships but Arsenal convinced the FA to rest him.

Yet the player then featured in the club’s Far East trip.

Capello added: “I selected him against Switzerland, he was fit. During the game, these injuries can happen.”

Wilshere is set to miss England’s final Euro 2012 qualifier in Montenegro next month and November’s home friendly against Spain.
