Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere's year-long injury nightmare is about to end with manager Arsene Wenger confident of an October return, according to a report.

The Gunners' England midfielder has resumed running, got through a tough programme of fitness work last week and is hoping to rejoin full training in four weeks' time, the Daily Mirror reported in an exclusive.

Wenger does not want to put undue pressure on Wilshere who suffered a series of setbacks last season.

The Frenchman has only been claiming he wants him back before Christmas.

Wenger's belief in Wilshere is reflected in his decision to let Song go and then not sign another midfielder other than Real Madrid midfielder Nuri Sahin, 23.

The club's decision last week to give Wilshere the No.10 shirt vacated by Robin van Persie was a vote of confidence in the youngster considered to be one of English football's hottest prospects.

Wilshere has suffered heartbreak because of his long-running stress fracture problem and then a knee injury.

But he is reported to be making good progress in his rehabilitation.
