Liverpool want to sign attacking midfielder Clint Dempsey for £6 million, according to the People (https://bit.ly/N9bzg4).

The Fulham star who became the first American to score 50 goals in the Premier League, has just one year remaining on his Craven Cottage deal and extension talks have stalled.

New Kop boss Brendan Rodgers is keen to seal a deal for Dempsey after missing out on Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Dempsey, 29, has consistently delivered high-level performances since arriving from New England Revolution in 2007 for £1.5m.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is also an admirer of Dempsey.

But a move to Anfield is now on the cards as they prepare a formal bid this week although Fulham will try to hold out for more cash.

Dempsey is keen on the idea of moving to Merseyside and did not sign an offer for a two-year extension at Cottagers in April.

Meanwhile, Dempsey's arrival could open the door for Craig Bellamy to make a sensational Cardiff City return.

The Liverpool striker is set for talks with Rodgers this week. Bellamy, who turns 33 on Friday, has just 12 months on his deal.

He made only 18 Premier League starts last season and if chances continue to be limited, Cardiff are ready to pounce with a fee expected to be less than £2m, the report added.
