While totaling up the losses this morning at Stamford Bridge this is the one that should not worry Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich the most – 45 million euros.

It’s what Chelsea made last year by reaching the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

It might pale in comparison to the £50 million he lost on sacking Andre Villas-Boas. Or the £50 million Fernando Torres cost him.

Or the £1billion he has spent overall on his Chelsea project.

Not making the Champions League this year will cost him 45 million euros, but he can easily cover it in the clear out that is being spoken of at Stamford Bridge.

The old war horses will be picked up by aspiring clubs, not least from China and Russia, for decent amounts.

Didier Drogba, in particular, looks like a prospect for such a move.

Frank Lampard still has two years of prime left in his feet. Though he may not leave, it is talk of him and John Terry running the dressing room that may have contributed to AVB’s demise.

Alex, Jose Bosingwa, Florent Malouda, Michael Essien and then of course, Fernando Torres will be need to let go to wipe the slate clean.

Which is why Abromavich might look at missing out on fourth spot in the league as a blessing in disguise.

Whoever comes in next will have the benefit of creating a new Chelsea. Chelsea 2.0, if you wish.

Daniel Sturridge, David Luiz, Ramires, all may remain to build around a core.

Though should Chelsea miss out on Champions League action, the vultures will begin circling.

Barcelona and Luiz have both confirmed mutual interest, already.

In terms of coaching styles, Rafa Benitez is furthest from what watchers at Stamford Bridge believe Abramovich wants. Which is why, he is unlikely to be the one to drink of the poisoned chalice.

It’s Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho or… bust.

Manchester City should look carefully at their footballing model, then.
