Manchester United great Edwin van der Sar predicts that David De Gea would become a legend at Old Trafford, according to The Sun.

De Gea endured a mixed first season at United after Alex Ferguson paid Atletico Madrid £17.8 million to make him Van der Sar’s successor last summer.

But the 21-year-old has been backed to fill in the boots of his predecessor and also emulated another United legend Peter Schmeichel.

Van der Sar said: “Maybe it was hard to follow in my footsteps. It can happen. People got compared to Schmeichel, now maybe it’s me."

But the Dutchman had words of advice for the youngster.

He said: “De Gea has to ignore that and just play his own game. Eric Steele, the goalkeeping coach, and the manager will both help him and hopefully next season he will be ready from the start.”

Van der Sar also sprang to the defence of De Gea pointing out that he too made mistakes at Ajax when he was young and also at Juventus and United.

He said: “The main thing is how you recover in the next game, or the game itself. He did that. He became more important as the season went on and made good saves."

Having been pipped at the post by City, this should motivate De Gea to reach greater heights to bring down the Goliath.

Hazard may snub Manchester clubs for Chelsea

Lille star Eden Hazard admitted on Sunday that Chelsea's Champions League triumph had made him reflect about which club he wants to join this summer.

Hazard played his final Lille game on Sunday, claiming a hat-trick in a 4-1 win over Nancy, and he had been expected to announce which of the two Manchester clubs he had agreed to join.

However, he revealed that he was still to make a decision about his future.

"As long as I've not put pen to paper, I won't say where I'm going," the Belgian international told Canal+.

"Chelsea makes you hesitate. They've won the Champions League and they'll be in it next season.

"For now, nothing's been decided, but it will be soon. Now I want to join up with the national team and then go on holiday. It'll do me a lot of good."

Hazard's treble - his first in the French top flight - took him to second place in the Ligue 1 scoring charts with 20 goals for the season.

Chelsea won the Champions League for the first time on Saturday after beating Bayern Munich on penalties following a 1-1 draw in the final at Bayern's Allianz Arena.
