Chelsea could make a shock swoop for Didier Drogba who has asked Fifa for special permission to move on loan from his Chinese club despite being outside the official transfer window, according to the Daily Mail (https://bit.ly/WjPzTm).

Fifa said on Wednesday it is considering the former Chelsea forward's request for an exemption from international rules.

The paper said that the Stamford Bridge club are keen for the striker to return to west London, even if it is just for a month.

"The Fifa administration services are looking into it," Fifa said in a statement.

Drogba's season with Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua finished this month.

The 34-year-old Ivory Coast captain could play for a new team to prepare for the African Cup of Nations, which kicks off on January 19 in South Africa, if Fifa grants the request.

Existing rules prevent Drogba from representing another club until January 1.

Fifa has upheld the rules in previous cases when David Beckham, Thierry Henry and Landon Donovan had to wait until January to make loan moves to Europe after the Major League Soccer season ended.

Chelsea are desperate to beef up their attack with British record signing Fernando Torres failing to fire.

The Blues are in turmoil after a string of poor results caused the dismissal of Champions League winning manager Roberto di Matteo after just eight months in the job.

Former Liverpool and Inter Milan boss Rafael Benitez has appointed manager in the interim as Chelsea seek a turn around in fortunes.

Chelsea are experiencing a familiar mid-season slump having just two wins in eight games.

The 3-0 humiliation at the hands of Juventus which saw European champions on the verge of an embarrassing group stage exit from the Champions League was the last straw for the Blues' Russian owner Roman Abramovich.

Chelsea fans have clamouring for the return of Blues icon Drogba and want Torres out in favour of red hot Colombian Radamel Falcao.
