Fergie’s Moura, Modric gamble pays for Man Utd

Sir Alex Ferguson will be a pleased man at the end of Friday’s round of international games.

Two of his key players at Manchester United came away from their respective games having played a huge part in both their countries’ victories.

The form of both players will vindicate Fergie’s decision not to chase the Brazilian Lucas Moura or push for Croatian playmaker Luka Modric.

Let’s start with the man who muzzles the Modric argument.

Tom Cleverley was the man behind England's victory in Moldova.

The midfielder was fast, accurate and played some delightful passes in an all-round display that will ease the worries about the United midfield not being able to match Chelsea or Manchester City.

After the game Cleverley said: "We all know where each other is in midfield, and we can all rotate it with the runs forward.’

Sir Alex certainly knows where young Cleverley is in the United midfield – at the heart of it.

Praise for Cleverley came from two-goal scorer against Moldova Chelsea veteran Frank Lampard, “Tom is a pleasure to play with and with him being at such a young age, he's going to be right in the middle of the team for years to come.

Holland has a tougher outing against a feisty Turkey side and United striker, Robin Van Persie scored as he spearheaded the Dutch victory.

Van Persie headed the Dutch into a 15th-minute lead and Luciano Narsingh scored late on in the Amsterdam Arena to seal the points.

That Van Persie can go off on international duty, score and come back without an injury will delight Sir Alex.

Without Wayne Rooney, Van Persie carried the United forward line on his shoulders and with four goals already in the league, shows no signs of letting up.

It will delight Sir Alex that he is firing on all cylinder.

And Sir Alex might even delight that Michael Carrick came on for Steven Gerrard for England against Moldova.

Having played two gamed for United as full back due to injuries it will be good for Carrick to get some game time in his natural role in midfield.
