Real Madrid may pip Manchester United in the race to sign Spurs midfielder Luka Modric unless sir Alex Ferguson moves swiftly.

Modric's former Croatia team-mate Mate Bilic reckons he will live Tottenham for Spain this summer, according to The Sun.

The 26-year-old has been linked with a move away from White Hart Lane after Spurs missed out on Champions League qualification last season.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, who successfully held of Chelsea's advances 12 months ago when they made a £35 million bid, is intent on keeping Modric at White Hart Lane during this transfer window.

United are reportedly offering the Croatian a four-year contract worth £25 million, with a weekly wage of £125,000

Reports over the weekend have linked Modric to Real Madrid, with boss Jose Mourinho said to be an admirer of the Croatia playmaker.

Bilic, who plays in La Liga for Sporting Gijon, says that move would appeal to the former Dinamo Zagreb midfielder.

He said: "Luka wants to play in the Spanish league. He loves the Premier League but he wants to play in Spain. He's very close to agreeing a move."

United were recently beaten to the signing of Lille winger Eden Hazard by Chelsea after the club thought they were favourites to land the 21-year-old.

Ferguson wants to rebuild his squad after his team finished without a trophy last season, having signed Japanese attacker Shinji Kagawa from Borussia Dortmund for £17m. He is also apparently interested in Everton full-back Leighton Baines and Newcastle defensive midfielder Cheick Tiote.

Tottenham will reportedly do all they can to prevent Modric from leaving to join Manchester United.

But with Spurs missing out on the Champions League due to Chelsea lifting the trophy, Levy will find it difficult to prevent Modric from leaving.
