Manchester United were close to sealing the £35 million transfer of Wesley Sneijder on Tuesday night, according to 'The Sun'.

United chief executive David Gill was ironing out the final details with representatives of the midfield star and Inter Milan, it said.

Gill had stayed behind in Manchester to complete negotiations on the club record transfer when Alex Ferguson and his squad flew out to the United States on Monday, the reported added.

It is a dramatic swoop by boss Ferguson, who will now have spent more than £85 million on four players this summer after also buying Phil Jones, Ashley Young and goalkeeper David De Gea.

He always knew he would need a world-class replacement for Paul Scholes - and Sneijder fits the bill perfectly.

United legend Gary Neville said: “Sneijder is a player with great football intelligence.”

No Nasri

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has ruled out a move for Arsenal's wantaway midfielder Samir Nasri this summer.

The French international midfielder has been heavily linked with a transfer away from the Emirates Stadium with United and neighbours Manchester City both believed to be interested in the player.

The Scot does not expect Nasri to arrive at Old Trafford before the close of the transfer window, but did suggest the 24-year-old may be bound for another club alluding to Manchester City.

“Nasri, no,” Ferguson said at a press conference on United’s pre-season tour of America. “I don’t think he’s coming to United."
