Dumped out of the Euros, but still wanted by the English Premier League’s top clubs.

Not many strikes can boast of that status, with several established names under fire for under-performing.

However, given Sir Alex Ferguson’s penchant for the wily trade and this website’s call for a Ruud Van Niestelroy-like attacking option on the United bench, a quiet deal could well be under way.

The striker in question? Robert Lewandowski.

Despite’s Poland early exit from the Euros, that too sadly as hosts, Lewandowski showed smart movement, an appetite for the aerial ball and did manage to score.

Currently playing for Borussia Dortmund, it was Goal.com that firs reported Poland coach Franciszek Smuda saying that Lewandowski was on his way to Manchester United.

Needless to say, Dortmund denied it.

However, Lewandowski has not.

Which in all probability puts him very much in the driver’s seat headed to Old Trafford.

The Welbeck-Rooney-Chicharito route looks set to be the bedrock of Old Trafford’s route to the title, but what of the days when defenders can see the touch and go coming; when Welbeck’s runs behind the defence or Chicharito’s darting moves are tracked?

United do not have an option.

Not until Lewandowski joins that is.
