Liverpool chase giant defender as Skrtel cover

Steven Gerrard

Does Steven Gerrard know something we (and most Liverpool fans) do not?

Gerrard linked up with his team-mates and Rodgers in Boston on Monday, midway through their American tour and was quoted as saying: “We’ll be back in the top four this season.”

Brendan Rodgers’ reign as Liverpool boss has hardly suggested a great revival, primarily because his attacking force has not crystallised after a clutch of failed signings.

No Sigurdsson, no Dempsey, and certainly no Carroll… at least if Rodgers can help it.

But what gerrard does know is that premier league titles are won by tight defences.

The last time Liverpool were a top four threat was under Rafa Benitez.

The Reds certainly did not tiki-taka their way to Champions League glory either.

No, it was a mean as hell defence and well, one or two goals.

Which is why for Steven Gerrard despite the second pre-season game loss to Roma (2-1 ) at Fenway Park he made his prediction?

Perhaps it was based on Liverpool coping with the loss of Martin Skrtel by getting this player - Athletic Bilbao’s 27-year-old centre-back Fernando Amorebieta.

According to Spanish publication Marca, Amorebieta is a Liverpool target.

Amorebieta is 6’4″ stalwart and was a target under Rafa Benitez, but is seen as being a wanted man for Rodgers as well.

Which is why, perhaps, Gerrard can sense a new wave of optimism.

Gerrard said: “We’ll see a bolder Liverpool team — and more exciting too.

“His man-management is fantastic and if he can do that with all the players in the squad, then it can be really good for the club.

“I don’t think a team has ever gone from eighth to first.

“But there’s still other big targets for us to achieve short-term and that’s getting in that top four again — that’s the priority.

“And if you perform hard enough and well enough, it will come. That is the only way you get it and I am confident we will.”
