Arsene Wenger has set the deadline.

Now it will be up to Liverpool, Chelsea and any other club that dare, to convince Theo Walcott not to sign on for Arsenal and instead to move in January.

The Walcott saga, which has not raised eyebrows at the Emirates simply because the club and fans have run this gauntlet before, with Samir Nasri, Cesc Fabregas and Robin Van Persie, will now have a two-month life span.

Arsenal Wenger said: “The longer this situation lasts the more difficult it becomes. I still hope to sign him and the next two months are vital.”

The England winger rejected an Arsenal offer of £75,000 a week and the grapevine has it that he wants £100,000.

Wenger might not see him worth that much, especially not the way his current team is playing fine without Walcott.

In fact, Wenger went so far as to say: “It will depend on the needs of the team and the club.

“We can afford to go to the end of the contract if needed.

“Let’s hope we can find a solution over the next two months.

This means, Wenger will leave Walcott, 23, on the bench for the game against champions Manchester City tomorrow.

This means, Liverpool and Chelsea are in with a chance.
