Liverpool's costly choice of flops Aquilani, Cole

New Liverpool boss is willing to give them a second chance at Anfield

Liverpool flops Joe Cole and Alberto Aquilani could be given a second chance at Anfield under new boss Brendan Rodgers.

Cole is keen to make an impact on Merseyside and Rodgers is happy to let him have a go.

The former Swansea manager said: "I met up with Joe Cole when I was in Spain. I certainly know he’s looking to come back. I’ve got to assess all the players.

"With the likes of Joe - he’s a very talented player. He’s obviously gone out to Lille and done very well and he has the opportunity to come back here and show his qualities.

"For me it’s fresh for everyone. I’ll be new into the club. Of course I know lots of the players and their qualities but Joe is obviously a player who’ll want to come back and show his worth to the group."

This would be music to the ears of Aquilani who spent last season on loan at AC Milan.

His agent claims Aquilani would be happy to stay at Liverpool if Rodgers wants him, according to The Sun.

Aquilani, 27, is under contract with the Reds until June 2014 but the Italian has struggled to make any impression at Anfield.

His representative Franco Zavaglia said: "The new Liverpool coach will decide Alberto’s fate.

“We will have to wait and see what he thinks about the player and whether Alberto will be of any use to the Reds.

“Alberto has a contract at Liverpool for another two years and they will let us know about their intentions soon.

“He would be happy to stay at Liverpool if he was given the right opportunities.”

Aquilani joined Liverpool in 2009 in a £20 million switch from Serie A side Roma.

He endured a disappointing spell on Merseyside before being loaned to Juventus in the 2010/11 campaign.

Juve opted not to sign the player on a permanent basis and he joined Milan on a one-year loan deal instead.

Aquilani has been linked with a return to the San Siro but Zavaglia has played down the rumours.

He added: "If Milan had wanted to sign him then they should have made their move sooner."

Aquilani scored one goal in 23 league appearances for the Rossoneri last season.
