Liverpool are aiming to derail Newcastle's ambitions of a top-four finish by considering a move for £7million hitman Demba Ba, according to the Mirror.

Brendan Rodgers has yet to make a signing since his arrival at Anfield and reports that Luis Suarez is interested in moving to Juventus could swing him into action.

The Newcastle striker is available at that knockdown price until July 31 because of a clause in his contract.

After that date, clubs would have to pay the 27-year-old's full market value.

Rodgers is likely to face competition for Ba's signature, with Tottenham also interested.

But Liverpool could find themselves confined to mid-table if Newcastle succeed in resisting the sale of Ba and make a double swoop of FC Twente defender Douglas and his team-mate Luuk de Jong.

Alan Pardew's need for a new striker was accentuated on Monday when Leon Best completed his £3m move to Blackburn, according to the Daily Mail.

During his time on Tyneside, Best scored 10 goals in 42 appearances but found his chances last season limited by injury and the form of Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse.

But despite interest in Ba who hit 15 goals last season, Liverpool are yet to show their intent of improving on their disappointing eighth-place finish last season.
