Liverpool are making a shock move for former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba who is unhappy at Shanghai Shenhua, according to The People.

Brendan Rodgers knows Drogba from his time as a Chelsea coach and is desperate to beef up his attack with Luis Suarez being the only fit hitman.

Drogba, 34, could be available to join a club in Europe as soon as the Chinese season ends next week, according to the report.

Shanghai Shenhua are believed to be willing to tear his contract, making Drogba a free agent and releasing him for a move back to the Premier League.

Drogba’s family still live in Surrey and is unlikely to play for them again when the Chinese season starts again next March since there is financial uncertainty at Shenhua, the Mirror reported.

An initial two-month deal could be struck to take him to Anfield until the New Year, it added.

The player wants to maintain match sharpness ahead of representing Ivory Coast at the African Nations Cup in South Africa in January and February.

Rodgers has the ruled out the return of Andy Carroll who was sent on loan to West  Ham.
