Manchester United are planning a raid for Birmingham goalkeeper Jack Butland as a back-up for David de Gea.

England under-21 international Butland is currently on his second loan spell with Cheltenham and has also been regularly watched by Arsenal this season, according to the Mirror.

Sir Alex Ferguson sent Manchester United goalkeeping coach Eric Steele to make a personal check on Butland in Cheltenham's game at Rotherham, the report added.

The 19-year-old has represented England at every level up to the under-21s but is still yet to make a first-team appearance for Birmingham.

Cash-strapped Blues are prepared to sell £3 million rated Butland if they receive a suitable offer.

United spent £17.8m on David de Gea last June.
