Paul Scholes can now seriously consider retiring… for good.

His place in the Manchester United team is in danger.

A combination of Wayne Rooney and Tom Cleverley is the new United midfield – devastatingly effective.

Sir Alex Ferguson watched Manchester United beat Newcastle 3-0 to climb into second place in the Barclays Premier League.

Inside the opening 16 minutes Jonny Evans and then Patrice Evra headed United in to the lead.

Newcastle will count themselves unlucky as five minutes into the second half, Demba Ba's header off the bar and Papiss Cisse's follow-up was saved by keeper David de Gea, but replays suggested the ball had crossed the line.

Then Tom Cleverley's 71st-minute strike from far out right finished off the tie.

Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and Danny Welbeck cut open the Newcastle defense time and again.

Even Shinji Kagawa impressed, at times.

Paul Scholes did eventually come on to settle United towards the end. It was a job done.
