Alex Ferguson will have second thoughts about offloading Mexican striker Javier Hernandez who bailed Manchester United out with a double at home against Braga in the Champions League.

It had been widely reported before Tuesday's match that Atletico Madrid were looking to sign Hernandez to replace Radamel Falcao who is sought by the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.

The Spanish side are reportedly preparing to offer £12 million.

Italian Serie A side Fiorentina are also interested in a move for the 24 year-old, but are thought to only be willing to offer United £8 million.

Hernandez enjoyed a sensational start to life at Old Trafford, when he joined from Guadalajara in 2010, scoring 20 goals in all competitions in his maiden season in Manchester, but he had been able to muster only seven appearances prior to the match against Braga.

The decision to rest his two most senior defenders in Ferdinand and Patrice Evra might have seemed like a good idea with Sunday's visit to Chelsea in mind.

"No, we have to look at the big picture - Rio, his age and a big game against Chelsea on Sunday," said the Scot afterwards.

But when first Alex Buttner and then makeshift centre back Michael Carrick were exposed in the opening 20 minutes, it left United facing a shock defeat.

United were grateful to Javier Hernandez, who scored twice either side of another Jonny Evans effort, to claw back a victory that leaves them with maximum points from their first three games.

Hernandez faces a tough battle to hold down a regular place as he competes with Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and Danny Welbeck, but Ferguson admits it is a selection headache he is happy to have.

"The boy is improving all the time. He's a fantastic trainer and practises all the time," Ferguson said.

"He's given me a problem and I think that's good. His goal ratio for us is fantastic.

"For his second goal, his movement was terrific. He bent his run behind the defenders.

"He trains magnificently, he's improving all the time and he's got such great enthusiasm for the game - he's got me thinking," he said.

"With him, (Robin) Van Persie, (Wayne) Rooney, (Danny) Welbeck... I don't know what you do with them, to be honest."
