Manchester United are planning a summer raid on Everton left-back Leighton Baines.

Sir Alex Ferguson has identified the Everton defender as a possible successor for captain Patrice Evra who is nearing his 31st birthday, according to a Daily Mirror exclusive.

Old Trafford are hoping to prey on Everton’s financial situation and land Baines for as little as £5 million, it added.

Baines, 27, has been outstanding this season and is putting pressure on Ashley Cole to be England’s first-choice left-back at Euro 2012.

However, his hopes of ousting Cole have been hit by a hamstring injury that will sideline him when Everton face United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Baines has over three years left on his contract at Goodison and is a big favourite with the fans. But Ferguson has been monitoring him for the past two years.

Wth Evra beginning to show signs of age and Brazilian youngster Fabio Silva to be sent on loan next season, Goodison boss Davi Moyes will find it difficult to resist any advance from United.
