Wayne Rooney could be out for nearly two months, according to reports in the British press.

The Manchester United star could may miss 14 games as details emerged of the horrific injury which he suffered on Saturday, The Sun reported.

Surgeons were shocked at the horrific extent of Rooney’s gashed right thigh which needed 10 stitches to pull his skin together.

Doctors at the Manchester hospital where Rooney was rushed could not believe the size and depth of the wound, caused when the studs on the right boot of Fulham’s Hugo Rodallega ripped into the striker’s skin, according to the Mirror.

United boss Alex Ferguson had thought it would only sideline Rooney, 26, for a month.

Now he could miss England’s World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine, United’s first three Champions League matches and crunch league games against Liverpool, Newcastle and Chelsea.

Rooney, who had been axed after his poor performance at Everton, now has a battle on his hands to get fit after recovering from his injury.

But given the length of time Rooney will be out – and his lack of fitness as a result – it could be early to mid-October before he plays for United again.
