Manchester United received welcome news with the return of midfielder Darren Fletcher for training after a prolonged absence from a bowel condition, according to The Sun.

The 27-year-old Scotland international was out of action from March to September with a viral illness.

It was later revealed that Fletcher has been suffering from ulcerative colitis, a chronic inflammatory bowel condition.

United gave Fletcher what they termed "an extended break from the demands of training and playing in order to afford the best chance possible of achieving full remission once again."

Fletcher is what Xavi is to Barca and was sorely missed last season, possibly costing United the title.

United were forced to recall retired great Paul Scholes to fill the vacuum.

But the heartening news for United fans is that Fletcher did some light running and ball work last week in a bid to resurrect his career, the report added.

Fletcher signed a new four-year deal with United last March, securing his place with the club until 2015.
