The die is being cast. The backroom bargaining may have even begun.

However, the most potent hope Manchester United fans have of Cristiano Ronaldo returning to Old Trafford is the fact that Real Madrid have lost. Again.

Not just any loss this, but a 2-1 loss to Atletico Madrid, which now leaves them six points behind league leaders Barcelona.

Real having lost two of their opening three games of the season and all murmurs about Ronaldo not being happy about the changes at Real are getting louder.

The spine of the Real team that allowed CR7 to flourish these past years is gone. Angel Di Maria? Gone. Sami Khedira? Gone. Xabi Alonso? Gone. Mesut Ozil? Gone.

Ronaldo made it publicly known that he was not happy to lose some of those players, especially Di Maria.

Ronaldo did score his 13th goal against Atletico Madrid last night, but the Real fans still booed the team off the pitch.

The UK media has been speculating this past week about CR7’s return to the Premier League, with Chelsea’s Eden Hazard’s name now appearing as a target for Real Madrid.

The Daily Mail today reports that Cristiano Ronaldo will join Manchester United if he gets a staggering £500,000-a-week.

Jose Mourinho or Louis Van Gaal? Stamford Bridge of Old Trafford?

Given the scale of spending at United in the recently-closed transfer window, the flow may not be over. Ronaldo may in fact be the final piece needed to ensure United do not spend any more time in the wilderness of Champions League-less football.

Whichever team does get him: Chelsea or United, the term ‘Galacticos’ will move from Real and Spain to England.

Falcao, Ronaldo, Di Maria, Rooney, RVP… How would you fit all of them in one team?
