Gylfi Sigurdsson struck a 72nd minute winner for Swansea City as Louis van Gaal's first Premier League game in charge of Manchester United ended in a 2-1 defeat on Saturday.

Sigurdsson, back at Swansea after signing from Tottenham Hotspur, fired in from close range to stun the hosts who had drawn level through skipper Wayne Rooney shortly after halftime.

Hopes were high for a winning start to the new season for the 20-times English champions after last season's woes, but the problems they suffered under David Moyes were evident again.

United had plenty of possession in the first half but lacked invention and pace and Swansea took the lead with their first real attack when Ki Sung-yueng slotted home after 28 minutes.

Rooney levelled with an overhead flick after 53 minutes and struck the post with a curling free kick but Swansea took advantage of some poor defending by United left back Ashley Young to pocket three unlikely points.

United rarely looked like equalising with fans drifting away from Old Trafford long before the end.

Full-Time

United 1 (Rooney 52) Swansea 2 (Ki Sung-yueng 28, Sigurdsson 72)

94" It's over as Fellaini's last-ditch shot finds Rooney in the way.

92" Another aimless foray by United into the Swansea area. United will need to change their tactics as their high balls into the box is not working with Fabianski showing a safe pair of gloves.

90" Four minutes of stoppage time added.

88" Fabianski has looked good under the Swansea bar. His makes collection of high balls look easy.

87" Swansea giving nothing away as United look desperate with barely three minute to go.

85" YELLOW! What's happening to the United players? Now Ashley Young is booked. Certainly not a good start for van Gaal in his first tenure at Old Trafford.

83" Frustration growing here for United as the crowd turns vociferous some even leaving the ground.

82" YELLOW! Blackett goes into referee Mike Dean's book.

81" YELLOW! Ki is shown the card.

80"We are left with ten minutes and though United are pressing it was Gomis who came close but for Jones' tackle in the nick of time.

75" Swansea make another change as Bafetimbi Gomis replaces Bony.

United 1 (Rooney 52) Swansea 2 (Ki Sung-yueng 28, Sigurdsson 72)

72! GOAL! United are caught wrong-footed here as Jefferson Montero, who just came in as a sub, found Wayne Routledge who slips it across for Gylfi Sigurdsson to score.

65" United bring in Fellaini for Herrera and Montero comes in for Dyer for Swansea.

64" Rooney curling free-kick hits the outside of the post.

60" Januzaj has been doing the hard work on the right flank but shows signs of being selfish. Here he shoots way above after Nani and Rooney were waiting for a pass.

56" Nani has brought some life into the United attack and in tandem with Rooney has the Swansea defence all at sea.

53" YELLOW! Jonjo Shelvey is shown the yellow.

United 1 (Rooney 52) Swansea 1 (Ki Sung-yueng 28)

52" GOAL! Rooney scores with a reverse overhead flick from a Phil Jones corner bringing relief to the Old Trafford supporters.

50" Bony's half-hearted attempt is unable to trouble de Gea.

47" YELLOW! Neil Taylor is booked for a harsh tackle on Januzaj.

46" Van Gaal makes another substitution immediately after the breather and it's Nani for Hernandez.

Half-Time

South Korean Ki Sung-yueng scored in the 28th minute to give Swansea City a 1-0 lead against Manchester United at half-time in their opening fixture of the Premier League.

The Old Trafford crowd was silenced when Ki neatly placed the ball past an outstretched David de Gea in goal after Wilfried Bony and Nathan Dyer exposed Van Gaal's three-man defence.

United 0 Swansea 1 (Ki Sung-yueng 28)

45" Three minutes of stoppage time added.

43" The crowd is getting restless as an equaliser before half-time would do better for United.

40" United had dropped 27 points at this ground last season and though they are pushing forward Swansea seem to be getting their act well.

38" United earn their third free-kick from the right but fail to make it count as Fabianski is stubborn in goal.

36" Mata free-kick goes to Hernandez but he shoots wide but not after unnecessarily pushing his marker.

32" Ki doing well in defence too to foil the overlapping Phil Jones.

United 0 Swansea 1 (Ki Sung-yueng 28)

28" GOAL! Ki Sung-yueng scores a beauty of a goal for Swansea after Wilfried Bony and Nathan Dyer caught Utd's back three defence napping.

26" Rooney header lacks power. Fabianski is kept busy by United.

24" Phil Jones has a crack at the goal and Fabianski does well to tip it over.

23" Yes, van Gaal has made his first change very early in the game. Lingard is out and Januzaj comes in.

21" United look a bit in disarray and looks like United are likely to make a change very soon.

18" Rooney's effort is futile as Fabianski is barely tested.

14" Swansea having more of the ball as Sigurdsson's shot is defended by Blackett.

9" Sigurdsson sends David de Gea scurrying to make a last-0ditch save.

5" Fabiaski is again out in a flash from his goalline to deny Hernandez this time.

2" Fabianski charges out in time to deprive Rooney from close range.

1" Debutant Jesse Lingard and Rooney make a foray into Swansea but Lingard is dispossessed on the right flank.

Swansea, white, get the match under way as United play in their favourite red.

Both teams are out in the middle with the focus on Van Gaal who looks a bit nervous as he waves to the Old Trafford supporters.

We are 15 minutes away from the kick-off at Old Trafford where Louis van Gaal will be hoping to get his Premier League campaign with Manchester United off to a winning start while Gary Monk will be hoping for the same with Swansea.

Louis van Gaal picks youngsters Tyler Blackett, who makes a Premier League debut, and Jesse Lingard in his first Manchester United XI. Looks like Lingard - who was on loan at Birmingham and Brighton last season - starts in midfield.

Swansea hand a debut to Lukasz Fabianski in goal, while Gylfi Sigurdsson makes his second debut after returning from Tottenham.

United manager van Gaal had this to say ahead of the match: "For me personally it is a big day. I shall be very disappointed if we don't win but it is only a step in the process. For the boys it is very important that we win.

"My message? Do what we have told you. And we shall win."

TEAM NEWS

Man Utd

Louis van Gaal's first competitive match in charge of United has been hotly anticipated and kicks off the Premier League campaign on Saturday.

Robin van Persie hasn't featured at all in pre-season and is a doubt so Javier Hernandez could partner new captain Wayne Rooney up front, with Danny Welbeck carrying a knock.

Elsewhere Ander Herrera will make his competitive debut for the club in midfield.

Swansea

It's been a busy summer at Swansea, with many of the outgoings at the club going somewhat under the radar.

Ben Davies and Michel Vorm left for Tottenham, while former first teamers Chico, Jonathan De Guzman and Pablo Hernandez are also no longer at the club.

Bafetimbi Gomis has signed from Lyon but will likely to start on the bench as Wilfried Bony's deputy. There could, however, be debuts for Lukasz Fabianski and Jefferson Montero, along with a welcome return from Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Louis van Gaal's biggest challenge as Manchester United manager will be to provide entertaining football for the club's supporters, he said on Friday.

After a successful series of pre-season matches, United open their Premier League campaign with a home fixture against Swansea City on Saturday.

The experienced Van Gaal knows he is expected to improve on last season's disappointing showing under David Moyes, who was sacked as the club finished seventh, their lowest position since 1990.

Van Gaal wants to do it by playing the attacking brand of football for which United are renowned.

"We have to give pleasure to the fans because that's the most important thing," Van Gaal told a news conference.

"Football is not only a commercial business, but also to entertain people. If there are no fans (in the stadium) even the broadcasters won't come."

The manager explained his decision to make England forward Wayne Rooney his captain after many observers had expected the job to go to Robin van Persie, the Netherlands' captain under Van Gaal at the World Cup finals.

"I like him (Rooney) very much, how he has trained and also how he has performed in the games," he said, adding that he had reminded the England striker of his responsibilities off the pitch (which) "is also very important to me".

Van Persie will miss the game against Swansea and continue working on his fitness after returning late to pre-season training following the Netherlands' run to the World Cup semi-finals.
