The case for Manchester United becoming a mental block rather than a gold mine for the England national team has got louder with another typical Wayne Rooney performance.

From the sublime to the ridiculous, Rooney went in what was a tale of two halves.

A red card means England’s best player in the Euorpean Championships qualifying rounds will miss the start of the tourney itself next year.

Can Rooney play without Sir Alex Ferguson? And can he deliver in a jersery that does not have the Red Devils on it?

England coach Fabio Capello had an air of resignation as he said, “I cannot control what’s inside Rooney’s head”… or something to that effect.

And therein lies the heart of the matter.

Sir Alex can.

Rooney lost the plot last year, lashing out at United, wanting to leave and forgetting how to score.

Sir Alex brought him back to life. To the tour de force he is this season.

Wayne Rooney’s dad was called in for questioning by police in a betting scam on Thursday.

Did that affect his performance?

Unlikely, going by his first half performance – involved in both goals, one with a sublime pass.

Wayne Rooney said sorry for his impulsive kick-out against Montenegro that led to a 2-2 draw.

While England should be celebrating quailifying for the European Championships, there was a clear feeling of just being “fed-up” in the British press on Saturday morning.

Capello needs to have a word with Sir Alex. Perhaps, more than he needs to have one with Rooney.
