Brendan Rodgers had his eyes firmly set on Gylfi Sigurdsson.

One area of the park where Liverpool suffered badly last season was in the midfield with Steven Gerrard out for long spells.

Rodgers has been on an ambitious buying spree and the Icelandic midfielder Sigurdsson topped that list.

The Liverpool revolution, as this website has dubbed Rodgers’ plans, has hit an iceberg.

According to reports in the British press, Tottenham are now in pole position to snatch Sigurdsson from Anfield.

Liverpool have three days more to complete the Sigurdsson deal, but The Sun today reported that Spurs believe their £8million bid has been accepted by Hoffenheim.

It’s Sigurdsson’s wage demands that have been cited as the problem, but surely the Fenway Sports Group, owners of Liverpool know that a revolution costs money.

Hoffenheim coach and ex-Liverpool ace Markus Babbel is quoted as saying: “If, by June 30, he has done nothing he’ll return to us.”

Meanwhile, Rodgers has to watch his back as far as Manchester City and their £20 million bid for defender Martin Skrtel goes.

Liverpool's Player of the Year has become Mancini's main target.

Brendan Rodgers does not want a Skrtel-sized hole in defence though Daniel Agger has expressed his desire to extend his Anfield contract.

Skrtel has also been the subject of interest from Russian side Anzhi Makhachakala.
