Argentina striker Sergio Aguero is on the verge of becoming Manchester City's record signing after undergoing a medical on Wednesday, according to British press reports.

Aguero has expressed his delight at arriving in Manchester to complete his £38 million move from Atletico Madrid to Roberto Mancini’s City.

The Argentine flew from his homeland on Tuesday night after the two clubs struck the multi-million pound deal, and took to social networking site Twitter on arrival.

About three hours later, he left to go to the club’s Etihad Stadium but, with negotiations seemingly very relaxed and moving along smoothly, Aguero opted to take a break and go for lunch before continuing negotiations later in the day.

He wrote: "Just landed in Manchester to finalise the details of the offer with the City. Everything is fine! In a while I’ll tell you more."

The capture of Aguero is a major boost to City, who beat off competition from Italians Juventus and Inter Milan and Spaniards Real Madrid.

Boss Mancini and City found themselves in the driving seat a few weeks ago when Arguero declared he favoured a move to England.

The highly rated 23-year-old is expected to put his name to a five-year contract worth around £200,000 a week.

City’s previous record transfer was Brazilian Robinho, who arrived from Real Madrid for £32.5 million as the new owners made him their marquee signing to signal their intent just days after taking over in August 2008.

The Aguero deal is believed to be closer to £38 million - the value of the buy-out clause inserted in the new contract he signed with Atletico Madrid in January.

City’s deal with Aguero is thought to have been sealed after the striker talked the move through with his wife Giannina, who is Diego Maradona’s daughter, in Argentina over the weekend.

The player has made 175 appearances for Atletico and scored 74 goals. He has also hit 13 goals in 30 senior matches for Argentina.

Aguero has been a long-term target for City boss Mancini.

City are expected to lose Carlos Tevez in the coming weeks and with doubts remaining over the reliability of Edin Dzeko and Mario Balotelli, Mancini needs a proven goalscorer before the Barclays Premier League season begins in two-and-a-half weeks.

Aguero has recently played with his compatriot Tevez in the Copa America and as such will be allowed some holiday before beginning his new life at the Etihad Stadium.

Tevez has been told to report back for training with Mancini’s squad on August 4 and the same will apply to Aguero, meaning neither player is expected to start in the Community Shield against neighbours and rivals Manchester United three days later.

City travel to the Republic of Ireland on Friday for two games in the Dublin Super Cup, including the pick against Inter Milan on Sunday.
