Sir Alex Ferguson is likely to be facing his worst injury crisis in over 1,000 games in charge of Manchester United.

While reports of captain Nemanja Vidic ruled out for eight weeks following a knee operation were confirmed by Old Trafford, the Daily Mail reported, exclusively, that United winger Antonio Valencia left the club’s Carrington training ground on crutches.

The report stated that Valencia’s right foot was in a protective boot as United’s medical staff continue to assess the injury he suffered in Sunday’s victory at Liverpool, winning the penalty which decided the game.

With Nani currently in the worst form of his life, Ashley Young out injured, Sir Alex can hardly afford to lose Valencia.

Not just for his capabilities on the wing, but for what he brings to the defence as well.

He covers for Raphael and can, and has, played right back.

This latest injury might force Sir Alex in the direction of Arsenal and Theo Walcott.

This is why Walcott at United no longer seems like a strange suggestion.

This website has argued that Walcott, who despite wanting to stay at Arsenal, may still be on the block at Arsenal, will be perfect for United.

Not only will Sir Alex find his cover for the wings, freeing Ryan Giggs for a roving role, but Walcott may relish the idea of linking up with Robin Van Persie once again.

Chelsea and Liverpool may be both still be interested, but in terms of having a clear run at a starting XI with genuine title-winning potential, Manchester United must draw Walcott.

Nobody uses wingers better or with more focus than Manchester United.

Walcott’s England hopes will fade if all he plays is 15 minutes off the bench and right now all he has is the hope of eyeing a slot in the Capital One Cup tie against Coventry tonight.

With Valencia at threat, Fergie is unlikely to find a readymade winger of proven talent anywhere in a hurry.
