Arsenal are showing signs of desperation to provide competition for Wojciech Szczesny by reportedly going for Emiliano Viviano.

Manuel Almunia has left the Emirates Stadium, while Lukasz Fabianski has made it clear he is not interested in staying as Szczesny's deputy.

Wenger needs to bring in cover before he can offload Fabianski and reports in Italy suggest he has set his sights on Viviano, according to the Metro (https://bit.ly/NPij1S).

The 26-year-old played for Palermo last season, but is co-owned by Inter Milan.

Neither club view him as a potential first choice for the new season, so his agent has been told he can negotiate a transfer.

Fiorentina have expressed a firm interest in Viviano, but Arsenal are apparently now ready to make a move for him, the report added.

While the former Bologna shot-stopper is currently out of favour with Palermo, his performances over the last two years have seen him force his way into the national team reckoning.

He made his debut for Italy in September 2010 and established himself as the Azzurri's second choice behind Gianluigi Buffon, only to miss out on Euro 2012 because of a knee injury.
