All-star line up set for Dubai World Championship

With yet another all-star line-up for the third staging of the Dubai World Championship presented by DP World, tickets are now available online for the $15 million finale of The Race to Dubai.

To be held under the patronage of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Sports Council, and staged at the Greg Norman-designed Earth course at Jumeirah Golf Estates from December 8-11, the tournament will see the top 60 players on The European Tour fight it out for a share of $7.5 million in prize money, a bonus pool of a further $7.5 million plus the considerable prize of being European Number One.

Once registered, fans will be entitled to two complimentary season tickets for a tournament that will see world number one Luke Donald, Open Champion Darren Clarke, US Open winner Rory McIlroy and Masters Champion Charl Schwartzel looking to follow in the footsteps of 2009 winner Lee Westwood and the defending champion Robert Karlsson.

In November last year, 2008 European Number One Karlsson of Sweden conjured up a superb end-of-season victory by winning the Dubai World Championship in dramatic fashion, beating Ian Poulter in a sudden-death play-off to secure the biggest tournament prize of the year and a healthy 58 Official World Golf Ranking points.

“The 2010 tournament again proved to be a great success for The European Tour, the top 60 players who qualified, our organising committee, the public and the sponsors who supported the event,” said Abdullah Al Naboodah, Chairman of the Dubai World Championship Executive Committee.

“The moment Robert Karlsson made the winning putt on the second play-off hole, the organising committee was already working towards the next staging of a tournament, which we believe is a unique event in The Race to Dubai.

“The city continues to show its support for unique sporting occasions and in the Dubai World Championship we have one of the finest golfing events in the world.”

The season-ending event was a huge success in both 2009 and 2010 with more than 50,000 spectators attending on each occasion for the exciting final event in The Race to Dubai.

And when the top 60 players descend on the Earth course in December, spectators will once again be able to watch many of the world’s greatest golfing names, while revelling in one of Dubai’s biggest social events of the year.

“The standard of golf, the quality of the players and the amazing atmosphere help make this an outstanding finale to The European Tour’s season,” said Colin Smith, European Tour Director International Business Development Middle East & Asia. “We’ve seen attendances break the 50,000 mark at each of the past two editions and we will be aiming to once again provide an unforgettable experience for fans off the course as well as a venue befitting the world’s best players.”

On the 2011 European Tour International Schedule, The Race to Dubai features 52 tournaments in 29 different destinations culminating in the Dubai World Championship. To qualify, players must have played 12 European Tour events on the schedule before the week of the Dubai World Championship.
