Britain clinched three more gold medals at the European Championships on Saturday with Mo Farah taking pride of place, adding the 5,000m title to his 10,000m crown.

Farah finished ahead of home favourite, and defending champion, Jesus Espana of Spain in a pulsating final to take gold, four years after clinching silver in Gothenburg.

"It feels great to have won both races. There was a point when I thought my hopes were under threat and I was concerned about my knees but I managed to pull through," said Farah.

Bronze went to Hayle Ibrahimov of Azerbaijan.

World champion Jessica Ennis stormed home in her heat of the 800m to win gold in the heptathlon.

The 24-year-old Briton did not have it all her own way though over the seven disciplines and in the end her total of 6,823 points was less than 50 more than second-placed Nataliya Dobrynska, Ukraine's Olympic champion.

Jennifer Oeser of Germany took bronze.

Britain's third gold of the night came from Dai Greene who took the 400m hurdles ahead of fellow Welshman Rhys Williams.

The 24-year-old Greene has been the top performer in Europe by some distance, regularly dipping below 49 seconds, as he did in the final on Saturday finishing in 48.12sec.
Third place went to Stanislav Melnykov, of the Ukraine.

France's Myriam Soumare continued her excellent form, adding gold in the 200m to the silver she won in the 100m and setting Europe's fastest time this season.

European under-23 champion Aleksandra Fedoriva of Russia was the previous quickest and came to the event as favourite, but could only manage third while silver went to the highly-fancied Yelizaveta Bryzhina of the Ukraine.

On the day neither could match the winning time by Soumare of 22.32sec.

"I gave everything I had to get to that finish line and I was worried about the Russian athletes because they were the favourites," said the French sprinter.

Poland's Marcin Lewandowski held off Britain's Michael Rimmer to take gold in the 800m.

The 23-year-old had clocked the fastest time in Europe this season, but Rimmer went into the race as marginal favourite having come into form at the right moment.
Lewandowski overtook Rimmer going into the final straight and had the endurance to reach the line in first place. Fellow Pole Adam Kszczot took bronze.
Turkey's Nevin Yanit flew home in 12.63sec to win gold in the women's 100m hurdles.

A delighted Derval O'Rourke, of Ireland, claimed second while Germany's Carolin Nytra, came away with bronze.

World championship bronze medallist Renaud Lavillenie of France continued his fine form this season by winning gold in the polevault.
He has come tantalisingly close to the 6m mark and it was an impressive effort of 5.85m which gave him first place with Ukraine's Maksym Mazuryk and Przemyslaw Czerwinski taking silver and bronze respectively.

Norwegian Andreas Thorkildsen, who has lost just once all season, won men's javelin gold while Ukraine's Olha Saladuha was crowned champion in the women's triple jump.
In the heat of the morning Lithuania's Zivile Balciunaite won the women's marathon.

The 31-year-old just missed out on a medal four years ago in Gothenburg but having targeted the European Championships all season, not even the high temperatures could stop her taking gold.

The veteran competitor was able to maintain her tempo in the second half of the race to finish in a time of 2hr 31min 14sec.
Russia's Nailya Yulamanova and Italy's Anna Incerti took silver and bronze  respectively.
