Dubai teen 5th in World Youth Scrabble

A teenager from Dubai has made it big at the recently concluded 9th annual World Youth Scrabble Championship in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Fourteen year old Sanchit Kapoor of Gems Modern Academy, Dubai, finished 5th in the world at the tournament, while another UAE player, Rohan Kapur registered the highest game score with 682 points, a new UAE youth record. Jack Durand, aged 14 from the UK, was the winner. He won 20 of his 24 games against his peers.

A team of children from the UAE took part in the 9th annual World Youth Scrabble Championship in Colombo, Sri Lanka from Aug 29-31, which featured 120 participants of ages 9 to 17 years from 13 countries and almost 1500 games of Scrabble over the weekend.

The World Youth Championship is now in its ninth year and this time attracted players as young as six years old. Competitors all played 24 games of Scrabble using one agreed international word list and strict time limits of 25 minutes per player.

Scrabble has been a popular game world over. It has been produced in twenty-nine different languages and has sold over 150 million copies worldwide and has four thousand clubs of its own.

The game has also seen a recent resurgence in popularity as millions have taken to playing the game on their smartphones and tablets.

The game is used by teachers to enhance literacy and teach spelling in a fun environment and in some countries like Thailand and Nigeria it is incorporated into the national curriculum.
