Singapore Slammers dash UAE Royals hopes of winning IPTL

DBS Singapore Slammers pulled off a dramatic win 23-21 against the fancied Musafir.com UAE Royals in Dubai on day of the Coca-Cola IPTL presented by Qatar Airways at Hamdan bin Mohammed Sports Complex on Friday.

Tomas Berdych stunned world no.1 Novak Djokovic 6-5 in an an exhilarating shootout to seal the tie for Slammers in the decisive Men's singles.

“It was fun. I hope you all enjoyed it, that’s what matters the most. It’s great to have a win like this. My team is doing a great job, we enjoyed it,” said Berdych.

Daniela Hantuchova won the first set handsomely against Kristina Mladenovic and helping the Slammers earn vital points.

“I really enjoyed the set and happy to get my team to a good start. It was a lot of fun out there. I have been working on my game, adjusting it to the needs of the IPTL," said Hantuchova.

A classic rematch between giants of the past Patrick Rafter and Goran Ivanisevic saw the latter playing some remarkable tennis and winning the set 6–1 to the delight of the home crowd.

“We didn’t expect to lose to them. It was fun, a lot of fun, really a great league, everybody was happy, everybody was into it. We have a really great team, all of them. Great experience, and I think next year is going to be even better,” said Ivanisevic.

In form Nenad Zimonjic and Kristina Mladenovic dominated the Mixed Doubles set against Bruno Soares and Hantuchova, winning 6–4 in fine fashion for the Royals.

Lleyton Hewitt and crowd favourite Nick Kygrios took on Zimonjic and Marin Cilic in a set that witnessed a powerful showdown and adrenalin-pumping tennis by the Slammers who won 6–3 before the final shootout.
