More than 100 bowlers from 17 countries will take to the lanes at Zayed Sports City (ZCS) this week as a long-awaited Ramadan ten-pin bowling competition gets underway.

The National Drilling Company (NDC) Ramadan Bowling Tournament, set to launch on Wednesday at ZSC’s Khalifa International Bowling Centre, will see UAE bowlers going head-to-head with competitors from the Middle East and beyond.

They will battle it out across three divisions – Men’s, Ladies’ and Youth – throughout the Holy Month and the grand final will be held on August 15. To date, 131 bowlers have signed up for the tournament at the 40-lane world-class bowling facility.

Barry Bremner, Director of Business and Corporate Services at Zayed Sports City, said: “Our regular bowlers have been eagerly awaiting the announcement of the tournament and we saw a tremendous response with registrations. It’s great that we’re seeing such a passion for bowling, particularly as we recently announced the Khalifa International Bowling Centre will be hosting the 2014 World Tenpin Bowling Association World Men’s Championship and the Women’s World Championship in 2015.

“The National Drilling Company (NDC) Ramadan Bowling Tournament is a fantastic way to celebrate the sport and we’re really looking forward to seeing some great talent from a variety of backgrounds and abilities taking part.”

At last year’s event Mohammed Al Qubaisi, who has recently been appointed Chairman of the UAE Bowling Federation, took the first prize of Dh25,000 along with the coveted Ramadan Bowling Tournament trophy.

The first prize in this year’s tournament is Dh28,000, with second and third places set to win Dh12,000 and Dh10,000 respectively.

Following this year’s tournament, Zayed Sports City is planning to host a series of championships in the 2012/2013 season. The next event is to be the National Day Bowling Championship, to take place in December 2012.
