Rebello and Pradeep clinch shuttle double

Deborah Rebello and Akhil Pradeep helped themselves to double crowns in the junior categories at the Etisalat Academy Badminton Festival that will conclude at the Etisalat Academy off Emirates Road on Thursday.

Rebello first took the girls under-16 singles crown with a 21-7, 21-9 win over Sara Siraj and then partnered Anjana for the doubles to defeat Sanjana Venkatesh and Neha Roby 21-14, 21-13.

The boy’s under-16 too was dominated by Pradeep as he set aside the challenge from Abdullah Shaheer with a 21-7, 21-18 win for the singles title, while he paired up with Roshan Joseph to defeat Abdullah Shaheer and Muanis Abdul Kader 23-21, 21-17 to take the doubles crown as well.

Earlier in the singles semi-finals, Pradeep had his most severe test when he waged a grim battle before defeating Muanis Abdul Kader 19-21, 21-11, 21-17 to advance to the final.

This inaugural edition of this tournament had attracted nearly 400 players in various age categories competing in the singles and doubles over two weeks of action at the Etisalat Academy campus off Emirates Road.

The final for the men’s singles is scheduled to be held on Thursday.

The badminton competition involving players in 17 different age categories starting with the under-12s up to veteran men over 45 years is an initiative from the Etisalat Academy Sports and Leisure Club with backing from the Dubai Sports Council in popularizing sports and physical activities within communities in Dubai.

Boy’s Under-16 (semi-finals) Akhil Pradeep bt Muanis Abdul Kader 19-21, 21-11, 21-17; Abdullah Shaheer bt Roshan Joseph 21-15, 15-21, 21-16. (Final) Akhil Pradeep bt Abdullah Shaheer 21-7, 21-18.

Girls Under-16 singles: Deborah Rebello bt Sara Siraj 21-7, 21-9.

Boys Under-12 singles: Amal Pradeep bt Ravi Sajayan 21-13, 21-18.

Ladies doubles: Guerlain Gabrillo and Sandra Diosanta bt Dipika and Teena 11-21, 22-20, 21-13.

Boy’s Under-10 doubles: Amal Pradeep and Adhil Olakara bt Ravi Sajayan and Abhishek Dinesh 21-14, 16-21, 21-16.

Girls Under-16 doubles: Anjana and Deborah Rebello bt Sanjana Venkatesh and Neha Roby 21-14, 21-13.

Girls Under-10 singles: Sara Siraj bt Tanisha Crasta 21-12, 21-17.

Boy’s Under-16 doubles: Roshan Joseph and Akhil Pradeep bt Abdullah Shaheer and Muanis Abdul Kader 23-21, 21-17.
