A 17-year-old New Zealand rugby player has died as a result of a head injury suffered in a match on Saturday.

Jordan Kemp was playing for the Otamatea against Marist in a club match at Whangarei on New Zealand's North Island when he was knocked unconscious in a tackle. He was flown to Auckland City Hospital and was listed in a critical condition with bleeding on the brain.

Kemp was pronounced dead Sunday, the Northland Rugby Union said in a statement.

The union said it is "currently working through the serious injury investigation process and will forward this through the appropriate parties investigating his death."

New Zealand Rugby Union chief exectuive Steve Tew said his organisation would receive a report and "would respond as we always do."
