2nd petrol tanker disaster averted in Saudi

Published

Saudi authorities managed to avert a second disaster in just two days when a petrol tanker hit another car and overturned before bursting into flames.

Civil defence unit who battled the blaze for hours finally succeeded in putting it out before the truck was towed away from a main street in the capital Riyadh on Sunday.

The accident took place at dawn when the streets were almost empty but resulted in blocking the road for more than three hours into the morning rush.

Police, quoted by Arar newspaper said there were no casualties in the incident, the third to involve a petrol tanker in the Gulf Kingdom in nearly a week.

Another gas tanker burst into flames after hitting a flyover in Riyadh last week, killing and injuring more than 100 people. Three days later, a petrol tanker caught fire near a gasoline station in the central town of Kharj before it was brought under control by firemen who quickly pushed the truck away and sprayed water on the station.
