Blowing up a 500-yard bridge in just six seconds

These amazing pictures show the stunning demolition of a bridge across the Ohio River.

The Fort Steuben Bridge had stood for 83 years, but it came down in just six seconds yesterday morning after 153lb of explosives were applied along its 500-yard span.

A stretch of the river was then closed for 24 hours as cleanup crews removed the debris of the bridge.

To me, seeing that bridge come down is like watching another era disappear, one where everything moved at a slower, more gentle pace.

Heritage needs to be preserved. It could have been left disused but should have been preserved

You should never burn your bridges...

Would it not have been cheaper to pour a few hundred gallons of aviation fuel on it and watch it fall down in the same way? It is supposed to have brought down two steel reinforced buildings!
