YouTube video helps unsung Keralite housewife attain stardom

A poor housewife from the Indian state of Kerala has won the hearts of hundreds of thousands with a YouTube video of her song posted on the social media site.

The video features the woman, identified as Chandralekha, singing a Malayalam song in her rundown kitchen and holding a toddler in her arms. According to media reports, Chandralekha gave up the dream of becoming a singer because of the socio-economic conditions around her.

But that changed when, one fine day, her husband’s nephew decided to record her voice on his mobile phone and later uploaded it on YouTube. A video was first uploaded on YouTube on September 22, 2012, more than one year ago, but it is the second repost, published on October 12 this year, that seems to have caught the fancy of YouTube visitors.
