15 years for 'belly' drug smuggler in RAK

A court in Ras Al Khaimah sentenced an Asian man to 15 years in prison after he was convicted of trying to smuggle 128 heroin capsules in his belly.

Police at RAK airport arrested the man after suspecting he was carrying illegal items when they noticed he looked exhausted as he walked towards the customs.

Scanning at hospital showed he was hiding the drugs inside his belly, according to the Arabic language daily Albayan.

The man later confessed that he was given the stuff, with a street value of nearly Dh500,000, by two men in his home country to sell it in the UAE.

The paper said the court also ordered the deportation of the defendant from the UAE after serving his jail term.
