55 clubs from 15 countries participate in AWST 2016

The Supreme Organising Committee for the Arab Women Sports Tournament (AWST) 2016 has announced that 55 clubs from 15 countries will participate in the event.

The opening ceremony will take place at the Sharjah Equestrian and Racing Club at 6pm on February 2, after which the tournament will begin with showjumping.

The details of the 2016 tournament were unveiled during a press conference at the Sharjah Ladies Club, SLC, in the presence of Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Head of AWST's Supreme Organising Committee; Nada Al Naqbi, Deputy Head of AWST's Supreme Organising Committee, Head of the Executive Committee and Tournament Manager; Abdul Aziz Taryam, CEO Adviser and General Manager of Etisalat (Northern Emirates), Khalid Omar Al Madfa, Director-General of Sharjah Media Corporation, HE Hamad Al Ahbabi, Business Support Director of IPIC and the press conference was moderated by the Emirati athlete, Maithaa Al Suwaidi, Sharjah Ladies Club (SLC) archery player.

The organizing committee revealed the final list of clubs and athletes participating in the tournament including Libya, Yemen, Bahrain, Jordan, Palestine, Somalia, Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Qatar, Iraq, Tunis, Morocco, Sudan, and the host country, the UAE.

It was announced during the press conference that the VIP list attending the opening ceremony includes Prince Talal Bin Badr Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, Head of the Union of Arab National Olympic Committees, Sheikh Isa Bin Rashid Al Khalifa, Deputy Head of the Union of Arab National Olympic Committees, Khalid Abdul Aziz, Egypt's Minister of Youth and Sports and President of the Executive Bureau of the Arab Ministers of Youth and Sports Council, and Tunisian runner Habiba Ghribi, among other high profile sports personalities.

Hanan Al Mahmoud, Head of Corporate Communications and Events Committee, said this year’s edition has seen more participation by Arab countries and its female players.
