The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City (ADM) has completed the demolition of 78 abandoned buildings in various districts of Abu Dhabi city.

It is part of a campaign to rid the neighbourhoods from old and abandoned houses and buildings which distort the look of the capital city.

Ahmed Fadil Al Mazrooie, Director of External Centers, Municipality of Abu Dhabi City, said: "Buildings demolished in Abu Dhabi city included 10 commercial buildings, 33 residential villas, 8 government buildings, and 27 porta-cabins all of which had been abandoned for lengthy periods; which have distorted the outlook of residential districts and streets, and become incompatible with the urbanization drive and high-class tourist facilities in the city. Moreover, those buildings have become a burden and a cause of inconvenience to residents due to the accumulated dust, waste and weeds as well as the proliferation of insects and rodents in a way jeopardizing the health and comfort of the inhabitants.

"The Municipality studied the project from all health, social, economic, and aesthetic perspectives and measured the harm resulting from the existence of these abandoned buildings. Accordingly the decision to remove them was taken to realize two major objectives, the first is to rid city streets of the unpleasant view of these buildings, and the second is to invest these unused spaces which no longer generate any sort of return to the city or owners.

The Director of External Centers, Municipality of Abu Dhabi City, concluded: "The Municipality's decision to remove those abandoned houses and buildings was prompted by its expeditious efforts to maintain the appearance of the city and thwart the adverse health implications that may rise due to the existence of these buildings, let alone their distortion of the overall appearance of the city."
