Bakery in Al-Ain fined over price hike

A bakery in Al Ain bowed to public pressure and suspended a hefty rise it has introduced on its prices to take advantage of a recent presidential decision to give public servants a pay rise, a newspaper said on Wednesday.

Residents of the eastern oasis town resorted to Facebook and Twitter to unleash a boycott campaign against the unnamed bakery before lodging an official complaint at the Ministry of Economy, Emarat Alyoum said.

“The Ministry fined the bakery after confirming that it raised prices without prior official approval…it was also forced to cancel that rise,” said Hashem Al Nuaimi, director of the consumer protection division at the Ministry.

The paper said hundreds of people in Al Ain joined an online campaign calling for boycotting the bakery after it boosted the prices of Manakeesh (Arabian pasty) by nearly Dhtwo.

“I joined the campaign after I felt that the bakery is taking advantage of the recent pay rise for government employees,” said Abu Hamdan, an Emirati resident of Al-Ain.
