Apple’s iPad has the fastest ever adoption rate of any technology, surpassing the DVD player, according to a report from Bernstein Research.

Apple sold 3 million iPads in its first 80 days and is now selling about 4.5 million tablets each quarter. That exceeds the 1 million iPhones sold in its first quarter and the 350,000 DVD players sold in their first year on the market.

“The iPad did not seem destined to be a runaway product success straight out of the box,” Colin McGranahan, retail analyst at Bernstein Research, told CNBC.

“By any account, the iPad is a runaway success of unprecedented proportion.”

The iPad is on track to surpass gaming consoles and mobile phones next year with an estimated $9b in sales, Berstein said. TVs, smartphones, and notebook PCs are now the top three largest categories.
