Cloud technology is the future of communication, and Motorola Mobility is banking on that very fact as it releases its new, revamped Razr, which is now officially the world's thinnest phone.

But its 7.1mm thickness, android technology and touchphone ability is not what's seeing the makers take on juggernauts Apple and RIM, who have the lion's market share in the region with the iPhone and BlackBerry, respectively.

"According to research, 97 per cent of user content is stored on traditional PCs and laptops, while three per cent of users actually have content saved in Cloud," said Spiros Nikolakopoulos, vice president for international retail distribution, Motorola Mobility. "We saw a potential to allow users to set up a personal cloud preference and that is where the MotoCast app comes in."

The app, which is free to all Razr users, allows users to power stream content from their home or work computers onto the phone for editing, viewing content and even streaming movies.

Said Nikolakopoulos: "Phones today have gone beyond their original role and have transformed into small handheld computers for people on the go. It needs to have the technology that is versatile and far reaching for consumers. And I think, with Razr, we have hit that market gap."

But such technology also leaves the phone wide open for security breaches and virus attacks.

Ask Nikolakopoulos and he says: "Any device with connectivity will be vulnerable to virus attacks. But we have ensured the phone comes with corporate security features and encryption technology to safeguard users."

Motorola's iconic Razr phone, which was first launched in 2004, targeted the trendsetting mobile users of that genre;  Nikolakopoulos says, the Razr profile hasn't diverted, but has only bettered in what users themselves have demanded.

"We are brand building here and the Razr user is still a trendsetter, fashion conscious and tech savvy," he said.

The phone, which was launched earlier this month in the US, Germany and Korea, is expected to release on November 11 in the UAE, with a retail price of Dh2,599.

The makers have confirmed they are currently in talks with etisalat and du to introduce data plans for the Razr.
