Will Nokia's 'Bandit' phablet help steal market
Nokia is rumoured to be working on a 6-inch phablet, the first such device to run on a Windows platform, in its efforts to regain dominance of the mobile telecommunication market.
The company already leads the popularity chart in the UAE as per the latest report by the Telecom Regulatory Authority. It is expected to soon roll out the Lumia 1020 in the UAE and is hoping to further strengthen its position within the smartphone sector.
The news of a possible big-screened Windows phone, codenamed Bandit, with a higher resolution was first reported by The Financial Times and followed by The Verge.
Quoting sources, another report by The Verge said the device will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor and a superior 1080p display.
Another Tech blog Nokiapoweruser.com gave a detailed timeframe and said the first set of phablets will only come with a camera similar to the one in Lumia 925, while a second set will incorporate the 41 MP camera.
“Now, our sources hint that Nokia will pursue this strategy further with next wave of bigger screen phablets as well. So, the phablet destined for a September-October launch may come with camera module seen on Lumia 925 and with 5.5-6 inch screen, but next wave of phablets will bring higher megapixel numbers with humps and that 16-lens lytro style camera. This launch is destined for some time in February 2014,” the report said.
Meanwhile Nokia officials in the UAE are yet to specify as to when their latest release, the Lumia 1020, will reach the regional market. But it is hoped the new phone should be here before Gitex Shopper.
Smartphone shipments for Nokia dropped to 10 million units in the second quarter compared to 12 million during the first, registering a decline of 14 per cent.
Nokia will be hoping that their forthcoming models will be able to help the company regain its dominance within the smartphone sector.
