Dubai has emerged as the top destination for shopping and hotels with global travellers in a new survey conducted by TripAdvisor.

The travel site announced the results of its second annual ‘Cities Survey’, revealing how travellers view key tourist cities around the world.

The results were compiled based on more than 54,000 responses from those who have recently written TripAdvisor reviews for featured cities around the world.

Shopping emerged as Dubai’s strong suit, beating the fashion capitals, New York City and London, to grab the number one spot.

Meanwhile, the emirate also came out on top for being home to the best hotels in the world, with Cancun, Mexico coming in second place, followed by Bangkok.

The accolade comes close on the heels of a by Daily Telegraph survey that saw people vote for the Burj Al Arab as the world’s most luxurious hotel.

Last month, Dubai was also named as one of the top 25 places to go worldwide in the Traveller Choice Awards 2014 by TripAdvisor.

Other contenders

The Cities Survey saw Tokyo rank first as the city with the best overall experience; it also claimed top spots for helpfulness of locals, taxi service, local public transportation and cleanliness of streets.

Tokyo ranked among the top 10 in 13 of 16 categories in the survey.

Other top contenders included New York City, which took home the prize for best restaurants and nightlife.

It also came in second for best overall experience, shopping and attractions/things to do.

In terms of value for the money, the Big Apple ranked number 30 and also ranked in the lower third for cleanliness of streets.

In the Middle East and North Africa region, Marrakech took a beating, emerging as the third lowest ranker for the least helpful locals, ease of getting around, restaurants and comfort of travelling alone.

The Moroccan city also got a thumbs down for having the worst public transport system, nightlife and being overall the least friendliest city for families.

Egypt’s Red Sea resort city of Sharm El Sheikh also took low ranking as the second worst city for travelling alone with comfort and attractions and the worst in the world for culture.

Meanwhile, in terms of overall experience, Mumbai has emerged as the worst city in the world according to the survey, ranked as the last place for clean streets, ease of getting around and third last for attractions and family friendliness.
